Identifying and Examining Health Outcomes and Healthcare Utilization Among Transgender Adolescents and Youth Accessing Gender-Affirming Care in Ontario: A Mixed- Methods Study

Project Summary

The goal of this study is to build a comprehensive understanding of the specific health outcomes, healthcare utilization patterns, experiences accessing the healthcare system, and health needs among transgender adolescents and youth (12-24 years) in Ontario, by utilizing administrative health data and in-depth one-on-one interviews. We will identify and assemble a cohort of transgender youth (n=3,000) in Ontario by collecting individual-level data and linking it to administrative health data held at ICES, which covers all publicly-funded healthcare encounters in Ontario’s universal health coverage system. This study will be the first in Canada to identify transgender adolescents and youth within population-based administrative health data and investigate their health outcomes and healthcare utilization patterns.
