Project Summary
This community-based mixed-methods research project focused on increasing understanding of 2SLGBTQ+ youth homelessness in York Region by providing a youth-focused snapshot of 2SLGBTQ+ youths’ experiences, barriers, challenges and needs across York Region’s nine municipalities. Key findings suggested high rates of hidden homelessness among 2SLGBTQ+ youth in York Region, a variety of experiences regarding 2SLGBTQ+ identity disclosure, numerous ongoing challenges accessing housing and support programs, and unaddressed physical and mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, suicidality, and self-harm.
The final project report included eight actionable recommendations to improve services across York Region, including the need to support the delivery of population-based housing options for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.
